Mission Bay, May, 19-20, 2012. The 2012 Herb Shear invitational was a fantastic event for Fleet 495! With 23 boats on the water, the roster was a perfect blend of seasoned veterans, coaches, sailmakers, women's teams, and an exciting group of junior sailors! Two days of racing in 5-10 knots of flat water racing kept exactly everybody in the mix and it was easy to make or lose ten boats in one shift! A total of 7 races were completed over the weekend.
International Snipe Class Commodore and MBYC Staff Commodore Don Bedford was on hand to deliver the trophies and enlighten the newbies on the significance of Mr. Shear's contribution to the class. Don was excited to see the energy over the weekend, and is determined to see the 2012 GFU Regatta occur over the 4th of July weekend, demonstrating the commitment to tradition and Serious Sailing, Serious Fun that defines the Snipe class!
San Diego Fleet 495 Captain John Fretwell and wife Aine Fretwell (each racing their own boat) have been instrumental in bringing Jr. sailors into the Snipe. This weekend was an awesome show of their hard work and dedication, as there were 15 Juniors aboard the 23 boats competing, including several All-Jr. Teams borrowing boats to compete.
